While you may believe that cold drinks are harmful to your health, this is not typically the case. Of course, if you are in danger of hypothermia, drinking a cold beverage can lower the body’s temperature further and put you at further risk for the condition. If you are in extremely hot weather, however, drinking a cold beverage can help to lower the body’s temperature and may save you from heatstroke.
When drinking a cold beverage, you are essentially bringing that cold beverage right into your digestive system. Since liquids pass through the digestive system more quickly than solids, their effect is faster. A cold beverage can affect the core temperature of the human body rather quickly, since it comes into contact with so much digestive tissue. This is why drinking hot chocolate on a cold day can cause you to feel warmer quickly. Imagine if you drank an iced tea on a cold day. Your core temperature would probably drop faster as a result of the cold liquid touching your digestive system.
There are some medical professionals which claim that drinking cold beverages has a “burning” effect on the stomach. This is thought to be the result of the shock on the stomach tissue once the cold beverage touches it. This is quickly reversed when the stomach acid heats up the liquid and brings it up to the body’s normal temperature. Some also say that cold drinks and foods require more energy to digest. This really doesn’t affect a normal healthy individual much, but someone with a weakened immune system or other health issue might not react well to drinking cold beverages frequently. Warm beverages may benefit them better, since the digestive system can process them easier. There is little research in the way of the long-term effects of this process, so it is hard to say conclusively whether or not cold drinks are horrible for one’s health. Their effects on cooling the body down when it is hot, however, stand out as a startling advantage.
Depending on what the cold drink you are consuming is, there may be other negative aspects of it. If you are drinking a soft drink, this has the disadvantage of sugar and carbonation. The wear on the enamel of teeth is often significant in people who drink large amounts of soda. Dentists usually stress that these drinks should only be consumed in moderation, however the amount of advertising soda companies have encourages people to drink more and more soft drinks. There really isn’t much softness when it comes to “soft” drinks, however, if they are ruining the enamel of a person’s teeth.
Even bottled waters can contain sweeteners nowadays. The best cold drink to consume is water from your own home, as long as your water is safe to drink. Not only does this hydrate you, it is also much cheaper than purchasing water from a store. With the escalating prices of bottled water, some feel that it is amazing how much money the companies which sell those products are generating in revenue.
